Uncle Ralph’s Carrots: Report #12 🥕

What’s with the carrots?

things that happened

🥕 My friend Ray, who is a manager at an Amazon center, sent me this text: “I’m already on the edge and I just had someone come find me in the bathroom to tell me she doesn’t want to stow because she lost her earbud.” The problems never seem to end, which makes me feel bad for Ray, but this had me cackling. 🤣

🥕 My nine-year-old niece has informed me that we are now pen pals.

🥕 I heard a weird animal noise while I was in a coffee shop and looked up. This man said “sorry!” That’s when I realized he had yawned loudly. Instead of saying, “That’s okay” like a normal person, I said, “Jeez, fella, I thought a dog was in distress!”

🥕 I went home to South Bend for a week to be with Nick and take a little break. While I was there, I got a lot done: I made 40+ meals for the freezer for Nick’s dinners, had a doctor’s appointment, did some interpreting observation hours, met with friends for dinner, watched movies, worked on puzzles, sat with the cat (who bit me twice), and got my car fixed up.

🥕 The Saturday I was home, I did an online assessment test for a company called Purple/ZP Connect, which mainly does virtual interpreting (a hearing person is on the phone, the deaf person is on the screen, and the interpreter communicates between both), but also offers community interpreting assignments. My goal was to pass the assessment and be chosen for a paid apprenticeship. I received a call a week later; they want to straight-up hire me, meaning I now have a job waiting for me after I graduate.

🥕 I have a test date confirmed for May 13th in Madison, Wisconsin. I’ll be taking what is called the BEI Basic because I want interpreter certification. Indiana does not require certification, but Michigan does, and it’s the ethical obligation to be certified whether the law says so or not. This test is really hard to book because it is still backlogged from COVID, and it’s only offered in a few states. I’m lucky the states near me offer test dates.

Hair cut!

I have more photos up on my interpreting blog where you can see the latest Deaf events that I’ve gone to.

  1. What a productive week —- including getting a job. Congratulations- though of course I’m not surprised you were snatched up. You are conscientious, fun and empathetic.

Can’t comment on the memes as they were all fun/entertaining. If I pick out one it will seem like I didn’t enjoy the others. Where do you find them all.

  2. Congratulations on the job. Good luck with the certification (Would you believe I have to be certified to operate a truck (as well as be licensed to drive) which involves an annual audit to make sure all my records are up to date. I’m not sure enough money passes through a bookshop for money laundering – but if anyone has money to launder I’m happy to buy books.

    • Thanks for the congratulations!

I’m not surprised about the trucker licensing and certification. Here, truckers have to be licensed like everyone else, and then they have added…I want to say certifications? They are for motorcycles and different kinds of trucks. Perhaps it is like interpreting: you’re certified after you prove you’re qualified, and then you register yourself with the state (that’s the license).

Your joke about library laundering is terribly funny, Bill!

  3. Congratulations on the job! That’s so exciting!!!

Also love that you have a new pen pal. What was the guy’s response when you said you thought his yawn was a dog in distress?

The chickens and the cat cracked me up!

    • I’ve sent in as many credentials as I could to negotiate pay. They don’t have a standard start rate; it depends on location and experience. Even a motorcycle license increases your starting pay. After that, I’ll get a training start date.

Lilly needs to write back to me! What the heck, girl?

I think the dog yawn guy laughed?

The chickens and cat cracked me up because I’ve been the patient with the medical intern, and now I’m the intern.

  4. Congrats on the job offer! Well done! And that sounds like good news about the certification. I hope that all goes smoothly for you.

I too feel like I am a big leaf when spring begins. Like, Oh, I just needed some sunshine and now I feel like myself again!

  5. Wow, congrats on the job, are you going to take it???? Gosh that must have felt good to be offered that right off the bat, you were made for this career!

The memes, as always, are hilarious. I think the best one is about the mushrooms looking over the witch trial lol

When cats bite us its because they love us, but they are also trying to set their own boundaries haha
