Uncle Ralph’s Carrots: Report #5 🥕

What’s with the carrots?

🥕So far, I’ve found a Walgreen’s, Aldi’s, book store with book clubs, and two libraries within walking distance of my AirBnB in St. Louis, Missouri.

🥕I finished the book bingo for the Boozy Book Club!

🥕This is an actual conversation I had with Nick:
ME: I love you. Don’t be afraid of me.
NICK: I’m not afraid of you. Just the little dark parts in your brain *and then he boops my temple*

🥕 This old fella super excited about light-up shoes.

🥕 When my mom said she won’t even buy a vehicle that doesn’t have a heated steering when because she’s not uncivilized. 🤣

🥕I’ve been watching and writing about some smart 1970’s horror movies: The Blood Spattered Bride (discusses marital rape and lesbian relationships) and Kingdom of the Spiders (environmentalism)

Memes i found

My mental health has been terrible this week, but that doesn’t mean I can’t laugh about it.
This might be me with horror, as I go about planning which holiday-themed movies to watch, and when, next week.

  1. My carrots for the week:

Seeing Wicked with my musical loving daughter (and her partner and my husband). Her ongoing love of musicals makes me so happy because I’ve always liked them too.

Seeing two beautiful art exhibitions – an Italian Design one, and a comprehensive Yayoi Kusama one.

Finally getting to see the grandkids today a week later than we expected cause their mum had COVID.

Enjoyed all yours but I have to say that dance marathon one versus free healthcare is so good.

So glad you are finding positives in Missouri. Look forward to lots of Missouri carrots.

    • I keep seeing posts about how Wicked was cast with an actress who uses a wheelchair, and in the entire history of the show, that has never happened before, which is…surprising. Do directors not think that a person in a wheelchair may not be a musical nerd, too?

I haven’t seen an art exhibition in ages, though for one interpreting class we went to different museums!

I hope you had a great time with the grandkids. I remember that picture you sent me of you playing with one of them, and I instantly knew you’re one of those fun grannies!

      • I think directors probably knew there were viewers/audiences of all abilities who like musicals but they all just think we want perfection or stereotypes (perfectly beautiful or really ugly) playing the roles. They probably also didn’t want to have to deal with the challenges of directing someone different abled! To be honest I had to stop and think about the wheelchair character when you said this … which I hope means seeing such characters is becoming normalised for me so I didn’t even think to comment on it as being unusual. But there was a whole scene about her dancing either the new young man in her life.

I hope I’m a fun granny. I saw a funny meme the other day. Went like this:

My mum as a mum: No, you can’t have that chocolate, it’s bad for you teeth!
My mum as grandma: you want sweets? Here’s a menu of our options. I can get out my mixer and make these and then we could put gummies on top… (and off she goes with all sorts of wicked options!)

There are some very funny grandma memes going around. Mr Gums used s**t in front of the grandkids yesterday though I don’t think they heard but our son was horrified and said “shh, Dad, you can’t say that!” Now I remember how disgusted he was at my rules about no swearing. “Oh, mum ….” he’d say, when I’d tell him off! I’m not a swearer.

Oh my, I’ve gone on again haven’t I.

        • The coffee has yet to kick in. I read “Mr Gums used s**t” and thought for a moment this was a YouTube channel that might feature a gentleman with no teeth irreverently sharing strange things found at a flea market. If this channel does exist, I am standing by, ready to like and subscribe. 👍✅

        • Haha, I love how you write, “I’ve gone on again” as if you didn’t know what you were up to with all your lovely comments. ☺️

I’m pretty sure my brother’s kids swear all the time. They have too many people in a too-small house for folks to not get irate. The hard part is when kids swear in the wrong places, like school, or just all the time.

I saw a social media influencer who uses a wheelchair praising the choice to use a disabled actor in Wicked, and some dink reminded her that the character is supposed to walk at some point….as if it’s not a movie in which people FLY.

          • I’m glad you don’t mind my rambling on, Melanie.

            Exactly … re Wicked.

That’s an interesting point about too many people in too small a house getting irate. I wonder if people swore in those tiny cabins the pioneers grew up in .. or is it just accepted now that you can let loose? But yes, kids need to know what’s acceptable and what isn’t within their culture. For me, I’d like to find others ways of handling being irate and leave swearing for something that shocks you (pain, some awful news or event) that you can’t help blurting something out?

    • I am not yet in Missouri. I’m leaving January 10th. However, I am looking around on Google Maps to find places that are familiar to me, such as the grocery store, book store, my gym, etc. I was surprised they were all so close. I’m thinking for most places I can just walk (assuming it’s not absolutely freezing, though perhaps I will think of you on your snow bike and brave the weather anyway).

      • Ah, ok. You mentioned an AirBnB so I thought you were there already. Really nice that so many of the places you will want to go are within walking distance! If you layer and walk fast you will get warm, exercise warms a person up from the inside. Just be careful of icy sidewalks!

  2. Life’s all carrots this week. I’m down at my daughter’s bush block which is looking more like a hippy commune every day – she has a house with her young kids, plus Lovely and my great granddaughter; Milly has a house with me in the spare room and Lou in a camper outside; and my daughter’s ex husband is camped on the other side of the machinery shed with two more sons.

Lovely made us all individual Bailey’s-based trifles for dessert last night, so I got to babysit greatgranddaughter (and one of her pre-school uncles) for a few hours.

I hope you and Nick have a fun christmas (despite whatever is going on in those circus tents).

    • Ha! I think the circus tent meme was from finals week. Everything is lovely now. I’m getting ready to create my end-of-the-year post and write a review of a Christmassy novel that has a lot of pornography (you wouldn’t know from the title or cover). I’m amazed at how you all get on. It sounds like you and your ex are sharing a room while another ex is by the shed. Many ex situations mean only speaking through a lawyer.

  3. Merry Christmas!! I am really enjoying these weekly posts! My recent little carrot was scrolling social media and thinking, “I’m so glad we never started an Elf on the Shelf tradition”!

  4. I needed these funny memes today, thank you, they made me laugh! My fav was definitely “marissa, you can stop dancing, there’s a better way” LOL. Alhtough I will say that we have free healthcare here in Canada, but we still have healthcare fundraisers for hospitals, ending cancer, etc. I don’t think those will ever not be needed.

We had to put Makita down today, she had bladder cancer 😦 This is why I’m so grateful for your funny posts, this one made me smile!

    • Oh, Anne, I’m so sorry about your cat. My family has had to put down several animals over the years, and it’s never easy, even when it’s the best option. I’m so glad my silly carrots post cheered you a bit. I shouldn’t call it silly; the whole point is we need a moment of joy, even if it’s a funny meme or something we heard. Sending you my love, and I didn’t even have to dance to send it. ♥️
