Uncle Ralph’s Carrots: Report #4 🥕

What’s with the carrots?

🥕I bought a brand-new food processor at Goodwill for $9 with my student discount. There is SO MUCH soup in my future!

🥕 I saw a sign outside a restaurant that said, “Taters taste better when you’re not stressed.” I had not realized I was responsible for the flavor of my own potato experience.

  1. A small carrot but I feel more relaxed at this time of year than I remember being for a long time.

Another carrot is all the beautiful Christmas gatherings I’ve attended … I love the renewed sense of community these gatherings bring.

I loved your carrots – a $9 food processor and soups. Woo hoo! If you find any great soups let us know. I suggest you start with carrot soups!

  2. Yeah, shame is not an effective treatment for any disorder I know about. Related: it’s terrible, but I’ve been laughing at the memes about the health insurance CEO, like this one: “I understand the CEO of UnitedHealth was shot but has he considered losing weight? Because that would help resolve those symptoms.”

Did you know there was a shooter look-alike contest in Central Park and as each contestant stepped forward he said “I am Spartacus!”?

    • It all feels very “let them eat cake” right now, but I also felt that way about Occupy Wallstreet. Then again, no one was killed during that time. I’m wondering if there will be copycats because people are reacting so positively to this. Other insurance companies must be worried about that, too, given how they have taken down all their board of directors information pages. 404 cannot be found, indeed.

    • Kitty is about a billion years old in cat years. Last night, she couldn’t be bothered to get out of her bed for me to pet her during story time, which she always does. I hope it is not an omen.

Nick looked up the food processor and found it goes for about $200 brand new.

    • I never thought about making salsa, but that’s a good idea because the stuff in the store has a LOT of salt.

The tree at the restaurant had so many stuffed ornaments, and I was like, “THIS IS AN UNTAPPED MARKET!” They were all adorable and good for cats and babies, lol.

There are SO many events that happen at my library, and here is how the exchange always goes in my head.

Me: cool, and event where I can pet animals.
      Posting: for ages 3-5.
Me: dammit. Cool, and event with board games!
      Posting: for ages 10-12.
      Me: dammit. Cool….etc.

  3. Carrots: Watching my daughter get awarded her PhD; having dinner with her and the older kids on a verandah on the waterfront; going for a walk through the bush with my youngest grandson and not finding a snake (he and his brother found one under the house last week).

    • NOT finding a snake was a carrot. I love that. Where I live, if you find a snake, it’s likely the kind that doesn’t bite and only eats mice. I’m picturing something rather horrific under your house 😵‍💫

I was telling Nick yesterday how cool it is that your daughter is a rock doctor. What’s next for her? I know a lot of geologists in the US hang out near the National Parks. They also have space geologists, so if she’s tired of earth…

  4. Wow that food processor is NICE. What a great find. My husband would love that chicken and waffles set.

I promise this year to take a picture of my tree so you can find the ducky ornament – it’s that time of year again already!

  5. What an amazing thrift store find!

That meme about shame and executive function has really got me thinking. My kids don’t have ADHD but they’re kids and they’re forgetful and I would still bring something they needed to school for them. I would and have done that for my husband and he’s done the same for me. There is this weird social thing sometimes where people want to teach kids lessons but what if the lesson we taught them instead is that sometimes we need to help each other out and support one another?

    • I’ve never met someone who intentionally wanted to be a hassle, so this idea that by helping each other out we’re teaching them to be “bad people” just seems ridiculous to me. There’s something out there in society that teaches us that we need to be on top of things at all times with zero help from other humans, and my mom and I were talking about how there are actually some humans out there who seem to forget that they’re part of the same species as everyone else. I likened it to a kitten who doesn’t know she’s part of a litter and wonders why she’s surrounded by kittens.

  6. That’s a very good point. It’s also very hard for a lot of people to ask for help so why not offer it where we can? Sometimes I play a game with myself at work when I have grumpy customers. I try to be as helpful and cheerful as I can to see if I can turn their mood around. It doesn’t always work and sometimes I don’t have it in me to try. But when it works it’s incredibly satisfying.
