Welcome to my new segment, everyone! Recently, I was inspired by the positive feedback to my most recent Sunday Lowdown and a post written by Stefanie @ A Stone in the River to look more locally, to look inward and outward, but not too far. What is in front of me? How would I describe it? How would I label the value of what I see, noting that it has value simply because it exists? Did you know my spouse stops every morning when the weather isn’t freezing at one particular corner, rolls down his window, and listens to the bugs for a moment before continuing his commute?
Recently, everyone’s favorite Biscuit has been taking her Uncle Ralph to Aldi (a grocery store) on Thursdays. Although he was deeply disappointed in the election results, he noted once he got back in Biscuit’s truck, “Did you see the carrots? Those were some beautiful carrots!”
Carrots, my friends. Have you ever noticed them? Therefore, Uncle Ralph has inspired this new series, and he gets all the credit, hence the title. All I’m posting is something I saw or noticed that brought me joy. I won’t be writing a lot; if I could do that, I would just write a Sunday Lowdown, but writing is energy from the heart, and I don’t always have it. So, without further ado…

Memes I saved that made me happy:

You better believe I started watching the Sleepaway Camp movies again.
I reviewed Clickbait: Unfollowed and Girl on the Third Floor on my horror movie blog.
I attended a Thanksgiving event with a Deaf Community about an hour north-east of me with my new friend, Ray. You can see a photo here.

Love whatever you decide to write Melanie – about carrots or whatever. Love your uncle. Love that old-ass lady. Love carrots. It’s all good, and thanks. Oh, and we have Aldi here too. Very popular with some of my friends but I have a supermarket I can walk to and that’s better than driving several kilometres to an Aldi.
(Now I must find time to read my backlog of Stefanie posts!)

I think Aldi is a German store, but I hadn’t realized it was also in Australia. It’s quite trendy here in some places. I mean, there are the Trader Joe devotees, but I’m Aldi all the way.

Yes it is German I understand. My Californian friend is Trader Joe’s – but I must ask if there’s an Aldi near her. We have a great Supermarket about 5 minutes walk away – it’s known across my city. I also live about 15 minutes walk from fresh food markets. So I never drive to a supermarket unless it’s to one of my favourite independent ones en route to or from somewhere!

I love Ralph! Give him a great big huge hug. He 100% gets it! And carrots! OMG they are such gorgeous vegetables. Not to mention tasty. I eat them almost every day. Thanks for the mention, the parked car, the puzzle (looks like fun!), and the memes. Also, that Nick stops and listens to the bugs every morning makes my heart so happy. Here’s to joy! It’s all around us all the time if only we pay attention 🙂

Sometimes I get nervous about taking pictures of things because I’m worried that I’m being performative. Why can’t I just enjoy the thing? On the other hand, though, I often take pictures of things that people don’t share when they’re being performative. So, I’m going to start taking more pictures to share my little “carrots” throughout the week. This segment should get rather interesting as I move to Missouri and enter a whole new life!

How long will you be in Missouri? Three months?

From January 10 to April 30.

Neally 4 months … a good time for learning but a long time to be away!

Absolutely yes to both. I know the internship used to be 10 weeks, not 15.

I hope your move and internship go well!

I love rolling down the window to listen to the bugs–I should do it more often. I do roll down my window every time I pass the dog fountain in my small town, to hear the splashing of the water.
I’m looking forward to Missouri photos!

Oh, that’s so sweet that they have a dog fountain. I’ve found myself listening to sounds of rain on YouTube more these days.
You’ll have to tell me where all the good stuff in St. Louis is, because I know you’ve traveled there several times.

I can consult with my best friend from HS about good places in St. Louis because the ones I remember are mostly from my childhood. The arch is always fun! There’s a root beer place that used to be fun! The zoo is still pretty good, from what I hear.

I do love zoos. I have a place in the 63108 zip code, if you know that area.

Love this post. Uncle Ralph has the right attitude! My meditation this morning on the Calm app was about being right here, sitting and noticing things. It’s a great way to stay grounded.

I think in future editions I’ll invite folks to tell me what “carrots” they saw recently. Thanks for sharing.

Focusing on the little things that make you happy is so good. Sometimes it’s something more major and sometimes it’s carrots and that’s good enough.
That meme with the old man and the shovel reminds me of one I saw recently: You know the old grumpy dad in Footloose who wouldn’t let the youths dance? He was 39.

Jerry was 39!? Why am I not surprised? 🤣 I scolded a classmate recently for having her feet on some very nice furniture at a historical theater.

I feel like the characters definitely look older than I do now but then I wonder if that’s just my own self-perception. Rose recently asked me if I were present at the confederation of Canada so that didn’t feel good. (It happened in 1867.)

Oh, Rose, that hurts mummy’s feelings. 😂

I’m not a fan of bugs, but I’m down at my daughter’s today and I’ve been standing outside enjoying getting rained on (drizzled on) and smelling the bush (three days ago I was up north and the temp was 40 deg plus (say 104F)).

That’s so lovely, Bill. Thank you for sharing. I wonder if fresh rain smells the same both here and there.

Dusty paddocks with wheat stubble is my favourite smell. I know eucalypt forests smell different from pines – my daughter’s is sub-tropical eucalypt rain forest with an understory of ferns and wattle. So yes, here and there probably do smell different.

Uncle Ralph has so much wisdom, and I’m here for it!!!
I almost spat out my tea when I saw the meme about the Home Alone actor and him being 38 LOLOLOL
This post made me so happy to read, I wish I had read it sooner

I’m so glad that you did read it, Anne. It’s going to be regular for me for a while at least. Throughout the week, I just add things that I see that make me happy, so it’s really easy to write. The reason I stopped the Sunday Lowdown is because it became time consuming and a bit draining. But if I can make the post more visual, then that’s the way to go for me right now.

I love the visual theme, I never actually see memes anymore b/c I’m basically off social media so this is a good way for me to see them again haha

That’s good! And you know I won’t be posting anything political, so it’s already filtered for you.
